Extremely versatile
SY-1000 is a psychedelic trip for an electric guitarist. I play in a cover band and in a synthwave band so I need versatility from my gear. I bought it to be able to diversify my sound into contemporary synth-driven music. And this little baby delivers!
My initial idea was to use the SY-1000 as an effects pedal and my Kemper rack as my main guitar processor. But after a few gigs I noticed that my Kemper wasn't necessary anymore and I sold it, as the guitar sounds in this box are more than enough for someone like me.
There's a steep learning curve as all the sounds need to be programmed. There's a bunch of default sounds, but a pedal like this isn't supposed to be used on default settings. It's like buying a Ferrari and driving it only on the first gear. It took me a half a year to really understand how the SY works and how it should be used. But the learning needs to be done only once.
Plus:
- It's a playground.
- Is capable of doing everything.
- Did I mention that it's a playground?
Minus:
- The learning curve is very steep for someone like me without any prior understanding of LFOs or sequencers.
- The desktop app needs some tender loving care of UX professionals.
- There's a minuscule latency, maybe a few milliseconds. It's noticeable only when playing accented funk-ish stuff, but doesn't affect live situations at all.
It's absolutely awesome that I can go to any gig having to carry only the SY and my guitar (and an expression pedal or two). Gone are the times when I needed a 20kg amp, mic, half a dozen pedals and duct tape. Plus I can play proper trance now.
Now that this guitar synth door has been opened, I won't be going back to a Fender + Twin Reverb world anymore. There's nothing for me there.
I'd love to give the pedal 5/5, but the abysmal UI drops the score to 4/5.
