This organ module was something that seemed to be perfect for me - a very affordable Hammond-style organ that could be used with a midi-keyboard. And when I started playing with it and trying all the features - that are very nice - I mostly liked the sound, but there was a huge disappointment: solo sounds are very very thin and lifeless. Rhythms sound very nice and full on the FerroFish B4000+, but when I started playing a solo, it was like a thick wool blanket was thrown on the speaker.
Pros:
- Lots of options and a lot of different knobs to turn to shape the sound the way you want, but if that's too difficult for you, then
- There are lots of different presets to choose from, that you can also edit yourself
- The overdrive is fantastic! When it's all the way down, the organ is all clean, when you start to turn it up the sound gets some grit little by little and when it's all the way up, it's a heavy distortion! But not too gritty and buzzy like some overdrive-effects on organs are. In my opinion it's a lot better overdrive than that of a Nord Electro.
- The Leslie rotor (spinning speaker) -effect sounds very good and can also be edited thoroughly.
- The screen is small but very clear and easy to operate
- Big chords sound nice and full
- Most importantly, the real physical DRAWBARS!! They are the best feature of all in this module. It is so much better to have physical drawbars than having them on an iPad screen.
Cons:
- Single notes played high sound extremely thin and weak. Adding overdrive, rotor effect, harmonics or anything else does not help. This is the reason why I was very disappointed in the FerroFish. If you do not play any leads, this will not be a problem.
- For whatever reason, some setting changed without my knowledge or consent and now I am not able to adjust my volume from my Midi keyboard, only from the FerroFish and it's very inconvinient. And I don't know how to change it back. Not nice!
- Some high notes have a very annoying and ear-unfriendly piercing squeal to them when played with overdrive. Why? Most organs do not have this problem.
In conclusion:
The poor solo sounds / single high notes makes playing FerroFish a disappointing experience. I do not like it. However, if you never play any solos / leads / single high notes, that won't be a problem. Chords and low / midrange notes sound just fine / very good.
So if it's not a problem, buy this! Apart from that one big problem this is a fantastic device and I am sad to not like it!
