3-in1 introduction in the world of FUZZ
This might very well be my first own fuzz pedal, if I remember correctly. I still have it, though I feel it's time to let it change owner. The reason is I have plenty of fuzzes nowadays and have found my tone, whereas I think this is more of an introductory level pedal or perfect for a player who needs different basic fuzzes now and then but does not build one's sound on a Fuzz effect.
There are plenty of people who are ready to spit on Boss in general and it seems this pedal particular, but let me tell you with a few year's experience that FZ-5 does its job just fine. With this price you get a virtually indestructible pedal with three very different classic Fuzz effects in it.
The Fuzz Face mode is closest to the original and probably most used / useful for the most of the players out there. It can do anything from vintage late 60's early 70's fuzz sounds to modern(ish) Doom / Sludge territory and anything in between. Robust sounding, musical fuzz. Maestro mode gives you the spitty and brittle but cutting "Satisfaction" style fuzz from the 60's. Octavia mode is the most subtle of the three, octaves really lighting up only after 11th fret (as they should, really, but even for a Octa-Fuzz it is subtle), yet giving some robust gnarl in your tone.
For me FZ-5 worked perfectly as an introductory pedal to the different styles of Fuzz. It is not super wild, out there, most exciting or most evil fuzz (like old Boss FZ-2 totally is), but it does its job very well and gives you 3 good tone boxes to tinker with in one compact and sturdy casing. I totally recommend this one.
