When comming from Pioneer and Denon dj stuff, this mixer is in another leag. Its a personal prefference for people having built in effekts or not on a mixer, this one is without and suits my way of djing. You dont get better sound elsewhere, it is just outstanding, and much more punchy. Not adding any colourfull sound using hpf/lpf, or cheap sounding effekts, beeing a nicky picky person, this mixer is why i wanted and it didnt let me down. I`m very pleased!

The Best-Sounding DJ Mixer I’ve Used
MC_K 06.02.2025
I’ve been using the PlayDifferently Model 1 primarily for my live set gigs, but also for DJing at my studio. The build quality is excellent, and the layout is incredibly intuitive imo. The approach of filtering tracks from the top and bottom with high-pass and low-pass filters is much more engaging than the standard low/mid/high EQ. It makes creative transitions and layering much more fluid, allowing for a more natural way to shape the sound in real-time. The DB25 connections make it extremely easy to integrate into a live setup, which is a huge advantage for performance flexibility.

I also have, so had the chance to compare it side by side in my studio, with the Allen & Heath Xone 96, the AlphaTheta Euphonia, and the Pioneer DJM-V10. Without a doubt, the Model 1 stands out as the best-sounding mixer of the four, by far. The clarity, depth, and resolution/precision in the sound are on another level.

One of its biggest strengths is the filters, which are superior in quality compared to the competition. The Pioneer DJM-V10’s filters sound noticeably worse, while the Xone 96 comes closer but still doesn’t match the smoothness and precision of the Model 1. These are, without a doubt, the best filters in any DJ mixer today. Even when compared to high-end analog filters in my studio—such as the Iotine Core, some eurorack Cwejmans and other great pieces—the Model 1 holds up impressively, delivering a sound quality that doesn’t fall short in any way.

If you’re looking for a high-end mixer with pristine sound quality, an analog-style workflow, and unmatched filters, the Model 1 is simply the best choice on the market.

This mixer does make me play differently
@NikkiNoir.Music 07.02.2025
Sound Quality: A Standout Feature

The sound quality of the PLAYdifferently Model 1 is excellent, living up to its reputation. It offers a relatively transparent sound, but with a round and punchy low end that is also well-defined, avoiding the muddiness that some analog mixers can introduce. The high frequencies are crisp and dry, without harshness, and the midrange remains dynamic and lively. The filters are exceptional, providing a smooth, natural response while maintaining transparency. Their design, combined with the EQ, allows for precise and musical sculpting of the sound, making them an integral tool rather than just an effect. For those who have done their research—yes, I play differently. The cliché is true. It's so much fun!

Creative Potential: Designed for Hands-On Artists

One of the most exciting aspects of the Model 1 is its signal routing flexibility. The dual cue system and stereo sends and returns open up plenty of creative possibilities, allowing for complex layering and external effects integration. I have fully integrated this into my hybrid DJ setup, combining Traktor Pro 4 with an RME sound card and several instruments, and it just feels like one big instrument—almost like when I'm jamming in the studio rather than simply DJing.

The Overdrive Circuitry: A Powerful Creative Tool

One of the biggest reasons I chose this mixer is its overdrive circuitry on all channels. I use high-end preamps in the studio with my synths, and the ability to find harmonics and dial in those sweet spots with distortion and drive on every channel is a huge advantage. For someone with a trained ear in sound production, this feature unlocks a lot of the mixer's potential. And being able to do that on the fly is incredibly engaging—that’s where I really feel like a painter, bringing out unique colors in every sound.

Build Quality: Mixed Feelings

This is where the Model 1 doesn’t entirely justify its premium price tag. While the industrial design is sleek, the actual build quality is not as robust as some might expect, especially compared to high-end Pioneer mixers.

The first unit I received had malfunctioning circuits, with the booth output heavily distorting.

The second unit had a noticeably higher noise floor in the headphones compared to the first.

Knobs were misaligned in certain areas, making the finish feel inconsistent.

The volume faders (sliders) felt slightly wobbly, which gives a fragile impression rather than the solid feel of a Pioneer DJM or an Allen & Heath Xone series mixer.

It’s not a dealbreaker, but for a mixer at this price point, one would expect flawless build quality. Functionally, it’s solid, but some finishing details and quality control could be improved.

Conclusion: Great for Sound and Creativity, but Build Could Be Better

The Model 1 is an incredible mixer in terms of sound and creative workflow. The filters, EQ, and routing flexibility make it stand out, especially for DJs and producers who like to shape their mixes actively. However, build quality inconsistencies and minor hardware issues prevent it from feeling truly premium. If sound design and creative mixing are your priorities, it’s a fantastic choice. If you need a rock-solid build and reliability, you might find some frustrations along the way.

As always, big thanks to Thomann för great customer service <3
