I was setting up a small home studio after i closed my big studio 6 years ago. The old one had pretty much everything but now i needed a simple setup at the lowest possible price.
So, i decided to go go for these passive monitors for 4 reasons: Low price, acceptable price, brand name with ok reviews and the fact that i had a poweramp already....
Expectation was not high at this price and these speakers have a lot of discount features for sure. Terminals for speaker wire to mention the most obvious besides the plastic cabinet....
I decided to let them play overnight to get rid of a harsh initial sound. Next day the presented an absolutely acceptable sound and as the hours went by i got even more surprised. Now i used them for the first project and they have the ability to reveal flaws in the tracks and mix that i didnt expect. The big disadvatage in the sound is the bass from natural causes. If you chose a sub be very careful to match it or you will get strange results when you play your project on good hifi speakers. I use a real good set of headphones to validate the sound before i take it to the hifi room.
For most people with a limited budget and limited space you can get really usable speakers with these JBL’s. Once you learn to compensate the bass in your mix you can actually get good results from them
