Top-notch hi-hat stand
Lots of hi-hat stands are marketed as ?heavy duty? but they pale when compared to this one. Anyone who wants robustness and stability (who doesn?t? there?s nothing more annoying for a drummer than a wobbly hi-hat stand) and a very fast and precise response should look no further. I had previously tried Tama?s high-end hi-hat stand, HH905D Iron Cobra, which costs almost the same price as the 5500D and although admitting that HH905D may be marginally superior (only marginally) in what concerns precision and sensitivity, it is more unstable than many low cost hi-hat stands ? it has only two legs and the base plate is so ill-conceived that it becomes, paradoxally, a source of instability.
DW5500D?s base plate adds stability and is fitted with an anti-slip velkro strip. With the spikes on, no matter how fast and hard you play, the stand won?t budge a millimetre. The stand comes with two rods, one of standard length and a shorter one, for those who prefer to use their hi-hats low and don?t want to have a long rod getting in the way of the drum sticks. The rod attachment is great: once set it never loosened, after a whole year of daily practice. The hi-hat clutch is OK, but I recommend making the upgrade to the peerless DW SMOTC one-touch hi-hat clutch.
