My first choice for toms
The D2 is great for instruments where transients are a distinctive character of the instrument (such as percussion). I prefer the D2 for micing toms than SM57s. I even tried it with great results for micing bass and guitar cabs.
In my opinion, the mic reveals the closest sound to what you are hearing in the room. I rarely feel the need for EQ. At the same time, there is a bit of a dip between around 510hz and 1.2k that really helps with clarity and carving out some of the mud. Also, I like its size weight and form factor, making it easy to use with a clamp or stand.
This gives the opportunity for very versatile placement in tight spaces or under low hanging cymbals. The bleed from cymbals is very little. The last thing is the price, which is great value for the money, and I would not be too concerned for the drummer hitting it, compared to Sennheiser MD421.

Great for toms and guitar cabs
As expected the microphone sounds really good on toms.
It's easy to position without taking up to much space and is durable and easy to transport.
A nice bonus is that it works REALLY well for capturing high-gain guitar, for things like metal.
Paired with an SM57 as dark mic (using the Audix as bright mic on another speaker cone) it gives you a great sound.
Highly recommended!

Perfect for Toms
I have four - one for each tom including the floor tom. Small body means it stays out of the way and doesn't interfere with playing. Great sound - highly recommended.

Special for toms
We needed a reinforcement for our Audix 4 pieces drum kit (kick, snare and 2 overhead) and now we have a full coverage of the drums, either for recording purposes or for live applications.
The sound is impressive and well picked up by the mic.
It has a metal chassis which provides robust housing and a good look.
It isn't surely cheap but it is worth the price!

Awesome Tom microphone
Incredibly compact, the D2’s feel like a quality product. Toms sound great with no EQ. I also use them on guitar cabs with a 57 and mix in to add some low end. I have 2 now and ordering a D4 soon. I’m new to drum recording and wanted a good quality set of microphones the help me capture a good sound. I’m delighted with the results I’m getting.
