Bang for buck.

Great sounding unit full stop, let alone for the price. Very versatile, especially when paired up with a second unit. Love using aggressive settings on unit 1 for vocals and then utilising the 'supernice' mode on unit 2 to reign everything in.
It isn't the most sturdy feeling unit, and the packaging is a bit minimal, but for the price you won't find anything better. Good purchase!

I’ve got both versions
Benharmonic 12.10.2023
The original RNC was the first compressor I bought. Now I also have two of the 500 series version. The main benefit over the original one is that the 500 series version has balanced inputs and outputs. When I record vocals, I always have the RNC 500 compressing the vocals in “Super Nice Mode” on the way in. In the past I’ve used the dbx 160A, the dbx 266xl, and the Warm Audio WA76. While I was able to get usable results with all of those, I feel much more comfortable getting the sound I want from the RNC 500. It’s less muffled and distorted than the WA76, and able to be more transparent than the dbx options. I plan to keep these in my rack for as long as I’m recording music.

A
Clean and versatile

A 500 series compressor with all the necessary parameters. So few compressors on the market at this price point give you knobs for threshold, ratio, attack, release and make-up gain. The super nice setting is also very transparent. I use it for voiceover work and tracking and its versatility is excellent. Great for tracking and a good price.

Characterless but effective
Sompn Brurl 01.07.2024
I've bought this item in need of a transparent compressor for recording.

Soundwise it's really clean, it can do a lot of work without noticeable compression.
Supernice mode is even nicer. If you need a character, this is not it, it's only gain reduction, but more transparent than plugins.

Mine has a fault: once I set the attack over 15 ms it stops compressing. LEDs show gain reduction that is not happening.
