Coming from a radio background the DT-100 series from Beyerdynamic are pretty much the industry standards across the whole sector. The obvious advantage of the DT-100/DT-150 is the fact that you can get replacement parts for every aspect of these headphones making them a long term investment. We have DT-100's here in our Radio Station that have been in use for up to 8 years.
The sound isolation that the DT-100's provide is second to non. In a radio environment our DJ's are always in close proximity to our live microphones, these DJ's have been on the go for many years now and some of them have developed hearing problems. So inevitably they tend to turn their DT-100's up to 11. And even still there is no sign of audio feeding back.
The sound quality of the DT-100's is excellent for voice work but I would always recommend upgrading for the better low end frequency response of the DT-150's when working with musicians.
Usually the sound from these headphones is described as being terrible. But that's if you compare it to HiFi headphones but why can these headphones be found in every studio in the world if they are so bad? It's because they are not bad. They are build for a specific purpose and that purpose is not to give you crisp highs and booming bass. These are meant for monitoring usually for vocals. They are good in the mid range and because of that they won't tire your ears and you can wear these for hours. They are very comfortable and they bleed very little audio which is of course important when you're recording vocals. My only gripe is why aren't these available in white anymore?? Every music video from the 80's that was shot in a studio features these headphones in white, so as soon as mine arrived I took them apart and sprayed them white :)
While I can comfortably wear this for many hours, and it looks well-constructed, I'm dissapointed by its frequency response. So it's very good to have on your head for entire days and night, and know what's going on, but *not* when recording musicians. Especially the low end is very weak.
